Swimming Pool Fencing

Last modified: July 7, 2008 - 12:34 AM

Pools can be great fun but for some time they have also been a tragedy. The Council wants you to enjoy your pool and has your safety in mind.

Please read this booklet so you know what is required (legally). You could be held responsible if something happens.

This information applies to swimming pools which may be used in dwellings, flats, home units, motels, hospitals, institutions, caravan parks and the like.

You MUST have Council approval for the construction or erection of any swimming pool. The attached information will tell you the things you need to think about and the things that must be done to make sure your pool is safe.

There is also a checklist on the most important issues including Council requirements and information on the standards for fencing construction.

Keep in mind - No protection measure or safety equipment can replace parental supervision of your children.

Young children, especially those of the pool user's family, should be taught to float and swim at the earliest possible age. Children should be made aware of water safety, but remember young children may not understand the concepts of safety, danger, drowning and death and they can forget quickly.

Therefore, children should always be supervised when using a pool. Drowning of young children generally have two features: silent and speed. It can take as little as 30 seconds for the child to become unconscious and lose the ability to breathe.

Pool users should be aware that if there is a death or injury in a pool, legal liability may fall on the person responsible for the pool at the time, even if a safety fence is installed.

This code is a guide only. For specific requirements please a Council officer

Please read the Swimming Pools and Safety Fencing booklet which can be downloed below, so you know what is required (legally).
