Over 200 youth members from Scout and Guide groups in the Upper Hunter, Tamworth and Liverpool Plains regions converged on Scone Regional Airport for a weekend of Air-related activities last weekend.

Youth members were grouped into 8 teams of approximately 23 named after different aircraft and worked through bases to learn various aspects related to flight and flying (24hr Time, Aerodrome Map, Aircraft Recognition, Circuit & Safety, Emergency Services, Flying over Glenbawn Dam, Inspections, Kite Making, Meteorology, Model Making, Paper Planes, Phonetic Alphabet, Principles of Flight, War Birds Museum). These bases were aimed at allowing the youth members work towards an Air Activities award badge appropriate to their section. Each of the attending groups helped to run a base over the weekend and the youth members were supported by some 70 leaders and parents.

"This is an important event for our Shire and for Scone Airport in particular. Comments from the Scout Pilots were very complimentary with regard to the recent runway upgrade and the facilities provided for the event were well received.

"Council was also privileged to have the group participate in its official opening of the Administration Centre and Council Chambers with the flag raising ceremony and guard of honour for Her Excellency Professor Marie Bashir, Governor of NSW", Mayor Johnsen said.

The highlight for many was the flight in one of 3 Cessna 172 Aircraft owned and operated by the Sc outs NSW Air Activities Team who flew up from their base at Camden Airport for the weekend.  216 people were taken for a flight over Lake Glenbawn and return over the weekend and all were blessed with beautiful weather.

"I attended the event at the airport on Sunday and the excitement and participation of the Scouts and Guides was terrific to see.

"Activities and events like this play a key role in helping develop responsible community members of the future and the Upper Hunter Shire Council is pleased to continue to support this event," Mayor Johnsen said.
