Merriwa Business Survey – Filling the employee gapAt the May 2008 Business Breakfast in Merriwa local business operators expressed the ongoing concern of maintaining and sourcing casual employees. Carlita McConnell from McConnell's This ‘n' That said "Attracting and maintaining casual staff is difficult because many take full-time employment as soon as an opportunity arises". A potential solution brought forward was the idea of sharing casual staff between businesses and creating full-time equivalent positions. Council's Merriwa Growth Strategy Project Coordinator, Miss Tess Hynes commented that "casual staff and job sharing arrangements are more common in today's workforce and more employees/employers are seeking flexible working arrangements." To better understand the current situation, Council has developed a business employment survey that will be conducted throughout August. The survey will cover areas such as current and future skills and employment needs, problems in recruiting staff, issues restricting effective business operation and identifying future expansion needs.
Local businesses are encouraged to complete the survey as responses to the questions will assist to develop employment strategies and to evaluate whether businesses could work together to alleviate some of the current workforce shortages. Contact details |
