2008 Elections
Key election dates
Becoming a CouncillorThe Department of Local Government has produced a publication titled "Becoming a Councillor". This booklet has been designed by the Local Government Association of NSW and the Shires Association of NSW in conjunction with the Department of Local Government as a guide to becoming a councillor in New South Wales. It is intended primarily for those considering standing in the 2008 local government elections, but it is also a valuable information resource for anyone interested in the role of a councillor or the processes of local government generally Non Residential RollsNon-resident ratepayers are entitled to vote in Local Government elections if they are listed on the non-resident ratepayers roll for the statutory period associated with a scheduled Local Government election. The Local Government Act 1993 (Section 299) provides that the non-resident ratepayer roll lapses after each election, including by-elections, and the roll is not maintained between elections. The opening of the roll for the forthcoming election is on Friday, 6 June 2008. Applications for inclusion on the non-resident ratepayers roll must be made on the appropriate form Click Here to download form.
Inclusion on the non-resident ratepayer roll entitles a person to vote in the election, but application must still be made for a pre-poll or postal ballot to exercise that right if not physically voting at a polling booth in the Council area on election day.
